The Union of Science for Sustainable Tourism Development (STDe) plans to promote salt parks to tourists as an environmentally friendly attraction.

STDe said 70 percent of the country’s tourism sector focused on Vietnam ’s 3,200km coastline.

Over the next 20 years, the STDe said it planned to cash in on the popularity of the sea by developing a tourism industry around salt production.

“Combining salt production with tourism is a way of capitalising on the popularity of the coast,” said Nguyen Thu Hanh, STDe’s chairperson.

Building salt parks will help promote the industry and preserve a traditional way of life, she added.

The annual carnival in the northern coastal city of Halong (Quang Ninh province) this year will attract nearly 3,000 performers, including nearly 1,000 professional artists from Hanoi.

According to the organizing board of the Halong – Quang Ninh Tourism Week 2011, the highlight of the week (April 29 to May 2) will be the Halong Carnival, entitled “Discovering sparkling Halong”. The carnival will take place at 8 pm on May 1, at the Bai Chay tourism zone.

The carnival will have the participation of nearly 3,000 artists, divided into 15 troupes to perform different shows.

The sea tourism route from Halong city in the northern province of Quang Ninh to Fangchenggang city in Guangxi province, China reopened on April 11.

Director of provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Ha Quang Long said the inauguration ceremony of the route is expected to take place on April 12 at Hon Gai Vinashin Port in Halong city.

Tourism promotion conferences will also be held to create favourable conditions for the two cities to introduce their potential, strength and tourism cooperation opportunities.

The resumption of the sea route, initially scheduled for Dec 2010 but delayed until now, embodies development in the two cities’ multifaceted cooperation, especially in sea tourism.

A cruise ship, departing from China, docked in Hon Gai Port on December 29, officially reopening Halong travel-Fangchenggang (China) sea route, after a long interruption.

This is a trial cruise as part of preparation to receive Chinese tourists in Halong City, scheduled for mid-January, 2011.

So far, Halong travel has received 5.3 million visitors and its tourism industry is planned to continue growing at the average rate of 20% per year in the upcoming time.
